2010 Tennessee Jewish Federations

Day on the Hill

The Chattanooga, Knoxville and Memphis Federations joined the Jewish Federation of Nashville for the second Tennessee Federations Day on the Hill on Feb. 24. More than 20 Nashvillians, as well as several Vanderbilt Hillel students, participated. The group was briefed on bills in the General Assembly that are of interest to our Jewish communities. Sen. Andy Berke of Chattanooga, the only Jewish legislator in the state, spoke to the participants about the importance of Jewish participation in the political system and the need to connect with our legislators.

Rob Friedman, from Vanderbilt Hillel, discusses support for Israel with Rep. Beth Harwell at the Feb. 24 Tennessee Federations Day on the Hill. Steve Edelstein, Jewish Federation executive director, and Jean and Phil Roseman listen.

Each Federation spent the early afternoon meeting with its representatives and senators, discussing topics ranging from Israel to immigration to adoption. In a late afternoon session, David Raybin gave his unique perspective, as a Nashville defense attorney and former prosecutor, on the inequities in the implementation of the death penalty in Tennessee. Afterward, there were a number of discussions concerning the issues he raised.

The day was capped with a kosher reception for all the legislators, where even more connections were made.

The day’s activities were arranged by the Jewish Federation of Nashville’s Community Relations Committee, a beneficiary of the Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign.
