The Beginning of a Giving Future

Kosher Food Stamp Challenge

On March 7, 2010, B’nai Tzedek had its first field trip ever for the “Kosher Food Stamp Challenge” where our B’nai Tzedeks went grocery shopping to find nutritious food on a typical Tennessee food stamp budget – about $4 per person per day as  a total for breakfast, lunch and dinner combined.  After first playing an ice breaker game of “B’nai Tzedek Bingo,” the B’nai Tzedeks were given $80 per team to represent a family of four’s meals for five days.  Using coupons, a list of the week’s specials, the food pyramid for nutrition know-how and a “cheat sheet” of acceptable heckshers, the teens learned exactly what this challenge entailed.  Afterwards, the teams displayed their purchases, comparing how much each team was able to purchase and how nutritious their purchases were.  The challenge led the teens to better understand how fortunate they are to spend $4 for one drink at Starbucks!  All the food was generously donated to the Jewish Family Service which provides a Kosher Food Box program for those in need.

The B'nai Tzedek program establishes a Foundation account in the name of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah age teen and has proven to be attractive to teens, who are learning the value of Tikkun Olam, the repair of the world.

Here’s how it works: the teen contributes a minimum of $125, which is matched by $250 from the Feldman-Hassenfeld Fund for B'nai Tzedek and $125 from the Jewish Foundation. The teen then starts with a fund in the amount of at least $500 and a new philanthropist is born!

B'nai Tzedeks meet every year around Purim to make their annual recommendations to various charitable organizations.  In 2007, the B’nai Tzedek program reached 200 members!  If you are interested in the B'nai Tzedek program, please contact the Jewish Foundation of Nashville at 615-356-3242.
